Department of  Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology of M.U.C. Women’s College has started its journey in the year 2004 to educate students in the field of Microbiology. At that time B.Sc. Microbiology (Hons.) course was a self-financed course in this college. Initially it was started with 19 students and very little infrastructure. Only one room was constructed in the first floor of the old college building for running both theory and practical classes. In the same year Dr. Anindita Roy joined as contractual full time lecturer in Microbiology and took the charge of the department. To cover the Biochemistry and Biophysics part of the syllabus, Mr. Dipta Nag, contractual full time lecturer, joined the department in September 2005. In the year 2006, the self-financing status of the department was withdrawn and Microbiology Honours course in this college under The University of Burdwan was declared by the Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal. In the meantime, Miss Minati Nag joined as a laboratory attendant and Mr. Anirban Mondal joined as part time lecturer. Mr. A. Mondal increased the teaching strength of the department effectively and subsequently he was promoted to contractual full time lecturer post in October 2008 and he continued to serve the department until 2014. In July 2010 Dr. Subhendu Chakrabarty joined this department as Assistant Professor in the first government approved substantive post and took charge as the Head of the department. Then the department shifted in its present position (third floor of the Golden Jubilee Building). In December 2011, Dr. A. Roy also was promoted to the Assistant Professor position in a substantive post.

Presently the department has adequate facilities and infrastructure to run the undergraduate course in Microbiology. In current academic session both 3-year Honours course under CBCS and 4-year Honours course under CCFUP as per NEP 2020 are being successfully conducted. The department has well equipped laboratories with modern instruments, ICT facilitated class rooms, departmental seminar library with more than 200 books covering all areas of the subject curriculum. Apart from the regular teaching-learning activities of the department the faculty members are actively engaged in research work and have publications in journals of high repute. The students of the department enjoy their learning in a homely atmosphere and they communicate freely with their mentors regarding all their issues. The department has the record of producing outstanding students in the field of Microbiology. Every year students of this department become rank holders in the university examinations. Many of the passes out students from this department are now holding prestigious positions in government and non-government sectors, industries, universities and research institutes both within India and in abroad.
