The Department of Chemistry is thus one of the oldest Departments in the College. Since inception in 1957, the department has been maintaining excellent academic standard keeping pace with the demand of the student. The Department started its journey as a Department offering only Chemistry General as subject. It was allotted three Teachers, One GLI, two laboratory assistants, and only a handful of B.Sc. Chemistry General Students. The Department has a small separate space at the KACHARI BUILDING of the Maharaja’s Office.Since inception the Department has gone a long way and in 1999 the University of Burdwan was allowed it to carry out course on Chemistry Honours as well as Chemistry General which was there since its inception. Two more Faculty Members were allotted to the Department and so the total number of Faculty member became five at this time. One GLI was there with two laboratory assistants. With this staff strength seven Honours students were admitted in this Department. In 2013 it was moved to a new separate building with almost 4000 sq. ft. area. It has four class rooms and three laboratory spaces right now.In addition, it has one Faculty room, two store rooms for instruments and chemicals. It also has a separate room for storing cooking gas which is needed to light the gas burner. The Department also has a separate laboratory space to carry out research for the Faculties of the Department. The Department has a full-fledged Seminar Library with more than 200 books and a reading room for the student interested in study with the books of the Department. The store room of the Department is having more than 100 chemicals and a large number of instruments needed for the student. Of other academic aspects of the department, occasional meetings between teachers and students to sort out some of the academic problems faced by the students deserve a special mention.
